I forget sometimes that not everyone is a HTML geek! An API is basically a way of pulling in information from another site. For example, I use an API to pull in my photos from Pix.ie and Flickr. The API needs information like your username (or user ID in the case of Flickr.) Some APIs (for example the Google one to import RSS feeds to show blog posts) require you to register with them and use a key (a really long code) The APIs also include their own styling (using CSS) to present the information in a certain way, so I have to override those styles to get it to display the way I want.
